The Georgia men's golf team will wrap up the fall portion of its schedule this week in California in the Stanford Classic.
The 11th-ranked Bulldogs will be competing today and Tuesday at Cypress Point Club, which has played host to the Crosby/AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am and the Walker Cup.
The Stanford Classic will feature eight teams. Joining the Bulldogs and host Stanford will be Washington, Southern Cal, UCLA, Duke, Michigan and Texas.
The tournament will use a rare match play format as opposed to stroke play normally employed in collegiate golf. The first and second rounds today will be four-ball play, followed by foursomes. On Tuesday, the teams will compete in singles matches. The NCAA Championship will be using both stroke play and match play for the fourth straight year next spring.
The Bulldogs are seeded fifth and will take on No. 4 seed UCLA in the first round. The other first-round match-ups have No. 1 Texas vs. No. 8 Michigan, No. 2 Washington vs. No. 7 Stanford, and No. 3 Southern Cal vs. No. 6 Duke. Winners and losers brackets will be used to ensure that teams play all three rounds.
Each squad will be represented by six players, and Coach Chris Haack will use a lineup of senior T.J. Mitchell, juniors Joey Garber and Michael Cromie, sophomores (and twin brothers) Sam and Sepp Straka, and freshman Lee McCoy.
"We're excited about the chance to participate in this tournament," Haack said. "Playing on a world-class track like Cypress Point and seeing some of the nation's top teams is a great opportunity for us. Our guys have had a solid fall and this is a great way to wrap things up."
