Bulldogs, Mitchell Place Second In Carpet Capital

The 19th-ranked Georgia men's golf team finished second in the season-opening Carpet Capital Collegiate Championship on Sunday at The Farm Golf Club.

The Bulldogs posted a final-round 6-over 294 to wind up at 8-under 856. Texas, the defending national champion, came in first at 13-under 851 and Alabama, the 2012 NCAA runner-up, was third at 1-over 865.

"This was a big tournament for us," Georgia coach Chris Haack said. "We had a lot of good things happen for us, and we can build on those moving forward. We're also a little hungry because we didn't win the tournament, which was our main goal. So we'll get back to work and keep getting better as the fall goes on. I am really proud of all the guys for the way they played."

Senior T.J. Mitchell, freshman Lee McCoy and junior Joey Garber all shot 1-over 73s on Sunday. Junior Keith Mitchell added a 3-over 75 and sophomore Nicholas Reach had the non-counting score of 4-over 76.

T.J. Mitchell placed second in the individual race at 8-under 206, two shots behind Texas' Brandon Stone. McCoy placed eighth at 4-under 212 in his collegiate debut and Garber had a top-20 finish as he came in 19th at 3-over 219. Keith Mitchell was 26th at 5-over 221 and Reach was 56th at 10-over 226.

The Bulldogs will return to action Sept. 23-25 at the PING/Golfweek Preview in Alpharetta, Ga.
