Henley Starts Strong in Hawaii at Sony Open

Russell Henley fired a 7 under par 63 in his first round as a rookie on the PGA Tour

Russell Henley made his presence known in his first round as a PGA Tour member during the opening round of The Sony Open on Thursday.  Henley currently sits in 2nd place at 7 under par after a first round 63, just a shot back of his playing partner and fellow rookie Scott Langley.  Henley and Langley shared the lead at various points during the back nine and were both tied for the lead on the 18th tee after a birdie by Henley on the par three 17th.

Henley was low among the seven Bulldogs in the field.  Closest to Henley was Erik Compton who fired a 67 and is tied for 17th at 3 under par.  Justin Bolli and Chris Kirk are tied for 27th at 2 under par, Harris English is tied for 45th at 1 under par, Brian Harman is tied for 88th at 1 over par and Ryuji Imada is tied for 109th at 2 over par.

Henley was one of the top stories of the day and PGATour.com did a feature on Henley and Langley on their past history and first round success.  (You can read the article by clicking here) Both Henley and Langley played in the 2012 U.S. Open at Pebble Beach and both tied for 16th place to share low amateur honors.

The second round gets under way today and can be followed live at pgatour.com.  The Golf Channel will have live television coverage beginning at 6:30 p.m.
